It is estimated that more than 1 trillion smartphone photos will be taken in 2014. Many of them will be shared to Instagram, the world’s most popular photo sharing app. In the four years since Instagram launched, it has amassed an incredible following: More than 200 million people log in at least once a month, and 75 million people use Instagram daily.
If you have yet to give Instagram a try, check out our Slideshare below to learn how to get started with an iOS or Android phone.
Getting started with Instagram
- Choose a username.
- Pick a profile picture.
- Decide if you want Instagram to send you notifications.
That’s all it takes! Once you sign in, you’ll be presented with the most popular posts on Instagram at the moment. After spending some time browsing around, you’ll be ready to upload your first photo.
You can take a photo directly within Instagram, or upload a photo you’ve already taken. After loading a photo into Instagram, one of the coolest features is the ability to add a professional filter, which makes even the most simple picture look like a work of art. After you get the hang of adding filters, dive into the editing tools to fine-tune lighting, saturation, and sharpness, or add an awesome blur effect with the tilt-shift feature. There’s nothing more beautiful than a picture of a burrito with the Mayfair filter and a blurry forest in the background. Nothing.
If you aren’t keen on Instagram’s editing features, we’ve got a list of other great photo editing apps.
Sharing with friends
One of the best ways to increase your Instagram reach when you’re starting out is to connect your profile to your other social media accounts. It’s very popular, for instance, to share Instagram photos on Twitter and Facebook. By connecting these accounts, your friends will also get a notification that you’re on Instagram, encouraging them to follow you.
At Jimdo, we love sharing Instagram photos of our delicious Friday breakfasts on Facebook.
Even more possibilities
Once you’ve mastered the Instagram basics, you’ll find that the community presents tons of opportunities for different kinds of visual content. Whether you run a business and want to build awareness of your brand or are a professional photographer looking to create a wider audience, Instagram is a great place to display your content in front of an audience of millions.
